St Petersburg Gouache painting of The Imperial Academy of Arts .St Petersburg circa 1834 framed in a burr elm frame. Most likely to be painted for ‘The Grand Tour’ .The Imperial Academy of Arts was finished being built in 1789 on the instructions of Catherine the Great. The Sphinxes are 3500 years old and placed in 1832 The Obelisk was built in honour of Count A. P Rumjantsev . The garden round the obelisk is missing,so the gouache was definitely painted before 1860’s. (with thanks to the Curator Nadia Andreeva of the Hermitage Museum for her historical advice).
